A modern version of a piquant red cabbage salad from Yorkshire which was known as ” Yorkshire ploughboy” according to Dorothy Hartley in ” Food in Enlgland”. The recipe is from ” Simply British ” by Sybil Kapoor. It should be served with cold meat and jacket potato. It can also be served as a warm red cabbage salad ( see instructions).
An easy and delicious traybake from Jane Hornby which I found on BBC Good Food. I made it for a cake stall at my Community Orchard Open Day earlier this month and many people complemented it. The version shown in the picture is not iced as it was a hot day!
Yesterday I hosted a little family gathering ranging from great grandparents in their 90’s to my youngest great niece at 7 months. Wanting food that was accessible to all I included this very moreish recipe for cocktail sausages from ” Cook , Eat, Repeat” by Nigella Lawson. Despite me doubling up on the quantities I am very happy to report they all quickly disappeared.
This good old English pudding is from ” Rhodes Around Britain” by Gary Rhodes. He credits it to Francis Coulson of the Sharrow Bay Hotel in Ullswater and says it is the best version.
A favourite way of cooking ham from the deep South in the States- it tastes much better than it sounds. Its from ” Nigella Bites ” by Nigella Lawson though she has an earlier version in ” How to Eat”. The stock left over from cooking the ham makes a good base for a black bean soup . Mild -cure gammon should not need soaking, but if you have a salty piece put it into a pan covered with cold water, bring to a boil then drain in a colander.
