Blackberry and Apple Compote (4-6)

caster sugar
1/2
pint
water

lb
eating apples
peeled, cored and sliced
1
stick
cinnamon
1
star anise
3
strips
lemon zest
8
oz
blackberries
Instructions
Put the sugar and water into a large pan and stir over a moderate heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Add the cinnamon, star anise and lemon zest and bring to a boil. Add the apples and simmer very gently for 5 minutes.
Add the blackberries and continue to simmer until the apples are very tender and the compote is thick.
Serve hot or cold with your preferred accompaniment.
