This is from ” Madhur Jaffreys Indian Cookery” which was published in 1982 to accompany her series on BBC 2. This was the first recipe book I bought and i still have my now very stained and dog eared copy. This is an everyday vegetable dish from the state of Gujerat which goes with any Indian meal but is also a good accompaniment to pork chops. The ingredients are readily available in supermarkets now but back then many could only be sourced in specialist Indian groceries.
A great way with white cabbage from one of my favourite cookbooks , ” Mowgli Street Food” by NIsha Katoona. She finally opened the Bristoil branch of this restaurant chain about 6 months ago, but I have yet to eat there.
A recipe from ” Nigella Christmas” by Nigella Lawson. She suggests serving it with hot or cold ham, turkey, roast goose or roast pork. Make sure you use unadulterated, unsweetend pomegranate juice. It improves with a bit of keeping so can be made in advance and reheated. One less thing to do when preparing the big meal!
A delicious side for autumn and winter. It’s from ” The Abel & Cole Veg Box Companion” by Keith Abel. It can be made a day or two in advance and be reheated. It also freezes well.
A simple Turkish salad which goes well with kebabs but can be served to accompany many things or as part of a salad spread. It’s from ” Moro Easy” by Sam and Sam Clark.
A slaw for any season from ” The Saffron Tales ” by Yasmin Khan. It goes very well with roast chicken or turkey, but also as part of a salad table. I served it with lamb burgers and new potatoes today.
An easy recipe from ” Mezcla” by Ixta Belfrage. You can serve it alongside some tofu, roast chicken or grilled fish or prawns. For a quick midweek dinner serve topped with a fried egg.
