A delicious snack and a great way to incorporate more oily fish into your diet from Nigel Slater’s ” Real Food”.

Potato and Smoked Mackerel Dauphinoise (4)
This is a favourite recipe from ” Real Food” by Nigel Slater. Although I have a couple of similar recipes by other food writers on my site I think his version was the first that I came across many years ago. SErve with rocket or baby spinach leaves to mop up the juices, or alternatively some green beans.
Smoked Haddock, Leek and Cheddar Fishcakes (3-6)
Sybil Kapoor’s Kedgeree (4)
A favourite version of kedgeree that I have been trying to relocate the recipe for for some years. Traditionally the rice and fish would be mixed together and the dish served for breakfast, but this version is best served for lunch or supper accompanied by plenty of white basmati rice. The recipe is from ” Modern British Food” by Sybil Kapoor.
Smoked Mackerel Caesar Salad (4)
Smoked Haddock with Horseradish Mash and Poached Egg (6)
An old favourite from ” Big Flavours and Rough Edges” by David Eyre and the Eagle Cooks. Its best to use undyed smoked haddock if you can get this. The Horseradish Mash can be replaced with Saffron Mash. Infuse a gram of saffron in the milk( or half milk and cream) while it is heating through and omit the horseradiash.
St Mawes Smoked Haddock Chowder (4-6)
Smoked Haddock and Leek Risotto (4-6)
Smoked Haddock, Pea and Chorizo Macaroni Cheese (4)
Smoked Haddock in Tarragon Cream (2)
My latest cookbook purchase is the excellent “Notes from a Small Kitchen Island” by Debora Robertson. Debora lived in Stoke Newington until recently( she has now moved to France) and in one of the chapters she writes about the area. It brought back many happy memories for me as i lived in “Stokey ” for 30 years before moving back to the South West. This brunch or lunch is based on a starter from a wine bar called The Fox Reformed, another place of happy memories as i held my wedding reception there.
