Tagliata would normally be made for a crowd but here is a version for two from Nigella Lawson’s ” Nigellissima”. Serve with fries, steamed potatoes or bread , and /or a rocket salad.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsps extra virgin olive oil plus some for oiling
- 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- a scant tsp sea salt flakes
- 2 tsps red wine vinegar
- 300 g sirloin or bavette steak
- 250 g cherry tomatoes halved
- a few sprigs fresh oregano to serve ( optional)

- Heat a griddle or heavy based non stick frying pan. In a small dish that can take the steak snugly later combine the extra virgin olive oil, chilli flakes, dried oregano, salt and red wine vinegar.
- Oil the steak lightly and put it on the hot griddle. Cook for 2 minutes on each side( for rare) then remove it to the dish of marinade . Sit for 2 minutes on each side in the marinade .
- Remove the steak to a board ready for slicing. Arrange the cherry tomatoes, cut side down in the marinade dish. Cut the steak into thin slices on the diagonal and arrange on two dinner plates.
- Turn the tomatoes around in the marinade then pour everything over the steak. Add a few sprigs of oregano and serve immediately.
